Tip Calculator
Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage, and split it between as many people as you like.
How Tip Calculator Works
This tip calculator works out how much to tip on a bill and, if you're splitting the check, how much each person owes. Enter the bill amount, choose a tip percentage (or tap one of the quick presets), and set how many people are splitting it -- everything updates as you adjust the sliders.
Formula & Method
The tip amount is tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100), and the total bill including tip is total = bill + tip. When splitting between more than one person, each person's share is total ÷ people for the total, and tip ÷ people for just their share of the tip. With only one person, the result is simply labeled "Total Amount" rather than a per-person split.
Worked Example
For a ₹500 bill with a 15% tip split between 4 people: the tip amount is 500 × 0.15 = ₹75, making the total bill ₹575. Split four ways, each person owes ₹575 ÷ 4 = ₹143.75 in total, of which ₹75 ÷ 4 = ₹18.75 is their share of the tip.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Should I tip on the pre-tax bill or the total including tax?
- Conventions vary by country and even by restaurant, and this calculator simply applies your chosen tip percentage to whatever amount you enter in Bill Amount -- if you want to tip only on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that subtotal rather than the tax-included total.
- How does splitting the bill handle rounding, like if it doesn't divide evenly?
- The calculator shows the exact mathematical per-person share (to the nearest cent/paisa), which may not divide out to a perfectly round number -- in practice, one person in the group often rounds up slightly to cover the remainder in cash.
- What are the quick tip percentage buttons for?
- The 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, and 25% buttons are common tipping benchmarks in many places -- tapping one instantly sets the tip percentage and slider to that value instead of you having to drag or type it manually.
- Can I use this for a 0% tip, like just splitting a bill evenly?
- Yes -- set the Tip (%) field to 0 and the calculator becomes a plain bill-splitter, dividing the original bill amount evenly across however many people you specify.
