Grade Needed on Final Exam Calculator

Enter your current average, how much the final counts for, and the grade you're aiming for — see exactly what you need to score.

How Grade Needed on Final Exam Calculator Works

Your overall course grade is a weighted average of your current average and your final exam score, so working backward from a target grade to "what do I need on the final" is simple algebra once you isolate the one unknown -- but it's easy to get wrong by hand, especially when the final carries an unusual weight.

Formula & Method

If your final is worth w (as a fraction of 100%) of your overall grade, your overall grade equals current × (1 − w) + final × w. Solving that equation for the final score you need gives needed = (desired − current × (1 − w)) / w. If the result comes out above 100%, the desired grade isn't reachable even with a perfect score at the current weighting; if it comes out at or below 0%, the desired grade is already locked in regardless of the final.

Worked Example

With a current average of 88%, a final worth 20% of the overall grade, and a target of 93% overall: needed score = (93 − 88 × 0.8) / 0.2 = (93 − 70.4) / 0.2 = 113%. Since that's above 100%, hitting 93% overall isn't possible here -- even a perfect final only pushes the overall grade to 88 × 0.8 + 100 × 0.2 = 90.4%, short of the 93% target. This is a real, useful outcome: a low-weight final simply can't move the needle far enough to close a large gap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would the calculator ever say a target grade is impossible?
When the final carries a small weight, even a perfect 100% score can only pull your overall grade up by a limited amount -- if your current average is far enough below your target, that limited pull isn't enough to close the gap, and the calculator flags this rather than showing a needed score above 100%, which wouldn't be achievable.
What does it mean if the needed score is 0% or negative?
It means your target grade is already secured based on your current average and the final's weight -- even scoring zero on the final wouldn't drop your overall grade below the target, assuming your current average figure is accurate and complete.
How does the letter-grade quick-fill work, and why might it be wrong for me?
It fills in the midpoint of the standard US 100-point scale for that letter (e.g., B+ fills in 88%, the middle of the 87-89% range) -- it's a convenient stand-in when you only know your letter grade, but your actual percentage could be anywhere within that range, so entering your exact percentage (if you know it) will always be more accurate.
Does this work if my final is worth 100% of my grade?
Yes -- at 100% weight, the formula simplifies to needed = desired, since your current average has zero influence on the final overall grade in that case, which makes sense: if the final is the entire grade, you simply need to score exactly your target.

Letter-grade quick-fill uses the midpoint of the standard US 100-point scale (e.g. B+ → 88%) as a stand-in — enter an exact percentage instead if you know it, since your actual grade could be anywhere in that letter's range.
