How GPA / CGPA Calculator Works

This tool calculates a credit-weighted average -- either your GPA for a single semester from individual course grades and credit hours, or your cumulative CGPA across semesters from each semester's GPA and total credits -- on either the US-style 4.0 scale or the 10-point scale common in India.

Formula & Method

Each row (course or semester) contributes credits × grade points to a running total, and each row's credits are added to a running total of credits. The final result is total grade points ÷ total credits, a standard credit-weighted average. On the 4.0 scale, grades map to points like A+/A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, down to F = 0.0. On the 10-point scale, grades map O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, down to F = 0. When using the 10-point scale, the tool also shows a percentage equivalent using the common formula (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, which is one widely used convention among Indian universities -- not a universal standard, since some institutions define their own conversion.

Worked Example

For three courses -- Calculus (4 credits, grade A- = 3.7), Physics (3 credits, grade B+ = 3.3), and History (2 credits, grade B = 3.0) -- the total credits are 9 and the total grade points are (4×3.7) + (3×3.3) + (2×3.0) = 30.7. Dividing gives a GPA of 30.7 ÷ 9 = 3.41 on the 4.0 scale. As a separate example, a CGPA of 8.2 on the 10-point scale converts to (8.2 − 0.75) × 10 = 74.5% under the common formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between GPA mode and CGPA mode?

"GPA from Courses" mode weights each course's letter grade by its credit hours within one semester. "CGPA from Semesters" mode instead takes each semester's already-calculated GPA and weights it by that semester's total credits, giving you a cumulative average across multiple semesters.

Why do rows clear when I switch scale or mode?

Grades and GPAs don't carry over between the 4.0 and 10-point scales, and course-level grades aren't the same kind of input as semester-level GPAs -- mixing them would produce a meaningless average, so the tool starts you fresh with new rows whenever you switch.

Is the percentage equivalent for the 10-point scale official?

No -- (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 is a widely used convention at many Indian universities, but it is not universal. Some institutions publish their own conversion formula, so check with your specific university before relying on this figure for official purposes.

Do rows with zero or blank credits count toward the average?

No -- a row only contributes to the total if its credit hours are greater than zero, so blank or zero-credit rows are silently skipped rather than distorting the weighted average.
