How Morse Code Translator Works
Morse code represents every letter, digit, and common punctuation mark as a sequence of dots (short signals) and dashes (long signals). This tool translates between plain text and Morse code live in both directions as you type, and can play the Morse code back as audible beeps using standard International Morse Code timing.
Formula & Method
Each character is looked up in the standard International Morse Code table (e.g. S = ..., O = ---). Letters within a word are separated by a single space, and words are separated by " / ". When you press Play, the tool follows conventional Morse timing: a dot lasts one unit and a dash lasts three units, with a one-unit gap between symbols in the same letter, a three-unit gap between letters, and a seven-unit gap between words (one unit is 80 milliseconds here).
Worked Example
Typing HELLO produces .... . .-.. .-.. --- -- one word made up of 16 total symbols (11 dots and 5 dashes), which is exactly what the result panel reports as you type it.

- Which characters does this tool support?
- Letters A-Z, digits 0-9, and common punctuation such as period, comma, question mark, apostrophe, exclamation mark, slash, parentheses, ampersand, colon, semicolon, equals, plus, hyphen, underscore, quote, dollar sign, and at-sign. Any other character is simply skipped when converting to Morse.
- Why is a word separated by ' / ' instead of just a space?
- Because letters within a word are already separated by single spaces, a plain space can't distinguish 'end of letter' from 'end of word' -- so a distinct slash-based separator marks word boundaries when reading Morse back into text.
- Why does nothing play when I click Play Morse Code?
- Playback uses the browser's Web Audio API. If your browser blocks audio without a prior user interaction, or doesn't support the Web Audio API at all, no sound will play -- try clicking Play again after interacting with the page.
- Does typing extra spaces between letters break the translation?
- No -- consecutive spaces or blank entries are collapsed automatically, so extra whitespace between letters or words won't produce blank symbols.
