Sleep isn't one continuous state -- it moves through a repeating cycle of light sleep, deep sleep, and REM that lasts about 90 minutes. This calculator works backward or forward from a time you enter in whole 90-minute cycles, so you land on a bedtime or wake-up time that lines up with the end of a cycle rather than the middle of one.

Formula & Method

The calculator uses a fixed cycle length of 90 minutes. In "Wake Up At" mode, it takes your wake-up time and subtracts whole numbers of cycles (6, 5, 4, then 3 cycles) plus your fall-asleep buffer, giving four candidate bedtimes. In "Sleep At" mode, it takes your bedtime, adds your fall-asleep buffer, then adds whole cycles (3, 4, 5, then 6) to give four candidate wake-up times. The headline result shows the range spanning the first and last option.

Worked Example

If you want to wake up at 7:00 AM and it typically takes you 15 minutes to fall asleep, the calculator works back from 7:00 AM: 6 full cycles (9 hours of sleep) means lights-out at 9:45 PM; 5 cycles (7.5 hours) means 11:15 PM; 4 cycles (6 hours) means 12:45 AM; and 3 cycles (4.5 hours) means 2:15 AM. All four are shown so you can pick whichever fits your schedule.
